Vet sales agent Ricky Tse is launching Bravos Pictures, a Hong Kong-based sales and distribution outfit.

Tse was previously head of sales and distribution at the Media Asia studio and at Emperor Motion Pictures.

“After an accumulated 14 years with Media Asia it was time for me to strike out on my own,” Tse told Variety. “We only opened our doors this week after Chinese New Year, so what you see now is us in our pre-launch phase, ahead of something more structured in FilMart and Cannes.”

Tse said the company will represent a range of Hong Kong- and Chinese-made films and acquire commercial indie fare for release in the two territories.

“European buyers are very selective about the kind of Chinese content they want — romantic comedies for instance are tough sells — but a certain kind of picture like ‘The Wrath of Vajra’ or Johnnie To’s ‘Drug War,’ which we sold successfully at Media Asia, can work.”

Bravos is partially financed by mainland Chinese sources, Tse said, though he was not at liberty to disclose them. Industry sources in Hong Kong point to Sun Entertainment, a production and finance company.
