‘Matterhorn’ on Top at Japan’s Skip City Festival

TOKYO — Dutch director Diederek Ebbinge’s drama “Matterhorn” was awarded the grand prize on Sunday (July 27) at the 11th Skip City International D-cinema Festival, which unspooled July 19-27 in Kawaguchi City, Saitama Prefecture, just outside of Tokyo.

The pioneering digital-cinema fest, which focuses on young film-makers both from Japan and abroad, awarded Natsuka Kusano its best director honors for her female ‘frenemy’ drama “Antonym.” The picture was also given the Skip City Award, which entitles the winning director to free post-production support for his or her next pic. “Antonym” is on a roll, having won top honors in the Nippon Visions section of this year’s Nippon Connection festival in Frankfurt, Germany.

Also in the Skip City feature competition, Brazilian Daniel Ribeiro grabbed the best scriptwriting prize for the drama “The Way He Looks,” a movie he also directed.

In the short film competition for Japanese film-makers, Takayuki Ohashi won for “Angel in the Closest,” while Yuan Yuan Hu took the best picture prize in the animation competition — a new event this year — for her cartoon “Sunset Flower Blooming.”
