‘Kundo: Age of the Rampant’ Smashes Korean First Day Box Office Record

HONG KONG – Korean period action film “Kundo: Age of the Rampant” has broken the opening day box office record in South Korea.

Opening Wednesday (July 23) it scored 551,000 spectators worth KRW4.08 billion (US$3.997 million), dethroning “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” the previous title holder.

Released by financier and distributor Showbox, “Kundo” played in 1,250 theatres – or about 63% of the country’s cinema screens – and scored a market share of 77% of all tickets sold.

That put “How To Train Your Dragon 2,” also opening Wednesday on 660 screens, into a distant second place, with 11% market share. Its 72,000 ticket sales translated into a first day gross of $570,000.

“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” released 13 days previously (July 10) slipped to third, with its $381,000 lifting its two week cume to $24 million.

Directed by Yoon Jong-bin, is a Robin Hood-like tale of militia who turn against unjust nobility. It stars Ha Jung-woo, star of “The Yellow Sea,” and Gang Dong-won (“Woochi”).

“Kundo” is the first of four major period action movies set to splash into Korean theatres over the coming months, with others coming from rival distributors Lotte, CJ and N.E.W.
