Korea’s ‘Roaring Currents’ set to Overtake ‘Frozen’ For 2014 Box Office Crown

HONG KONG – Period action film “Roaring Currents” has added another astonishing record as it sits atop the Korean box office for the second weekend.

According to distributor CJ Entertainment, the film became only the twelfth film ever to have sold more than 10 million tickets. And, in 12 days, it did so the fastest time.

Using data supplied from the Korean Film Council’s KOBIS service supplied only to distributors, CJ reported that by 8am today (Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014) “Roaring Currents” had scored a cumulative 10.226 million ticket sales. (The publicly accessibly parts of KOBIS have not yet been updated and still show 9.75 million admissions.)

That puts it within a few screenings of “Frozen” which is currently the top film of the year at the Korean B.O. with a total of 10.295 million ticket sales. And it also means that “Roaring Currents” has overtaken “Miss Granny,” which had until this weekend stood as the top Korean-made film of the year, with ticket sales of 8.66 million.

In financial terms “Roaring Currents” has now grossed an estimated US$76 million (KRW78.7 trillion).

The top film of all time in Korea remains “Avatar” with 13.3 million ticket sales. And the top Korean film is “The Host” with 13.02 million.

Few commentators, however, are betting against “Roaring Currents” getting very close to or even overtaking those numbers. That’s because, along the way, it has performed like no other film to in Korean history.

In addition to being the fastest to pass all the million sales milestones up to the 10 million mark, “Roaring Currents” has also claimed the record for biggest opening day score (680,000 tickets), biggest weekday (980,000 tickets) and biggest single day score (1.25 million).

“Roaring Currents” is a 16th century-set story of a Korean naval commander’s unlikely victory over Japanese forces. It stars Choi Min-sik (“Old Boy,” “Lucy”) as Admiral Yi Sun-sin and Ryu Seung-ryong as his Japanese opponent.
