Joseph Fiennes Joins Nicole Kidman in ‘Strangerland’

Production starts in Australia on mystery drama.

HONG KONG – Joseph Fiennes has joined the cast of Nicole Kidman-starring “Strangerland” which begins shooting this week in Australia.

Directed by Kim Farrant, the mystery drama features couple (played by Nicole Kidman and Joseph Fiennes) whose lives unravel after their two teenage children go missing in the harsh Australian desert.   Hugo Weaving plays the policeman leading the investigation.

The role of the husband had previously been announced as being played by Guy Pearce.

Other cast includes Lisa Flanagan, Meyne Wyatt, Nicholas Hamilton and, in her first major acting role, model Maddison Brown.

French sales agent Wild Bunch has international rights. Transmission Films will release the picture in Australia and New Zealand.

Finance comes from Worldview Entertainment, Screen Australia, Screen NSW and the Irish Film Board.

Worldview Entertainment’s Christopher Woodrow, Molly Conners, Maria Cestone, Sarah E. Johnson are executive producing alongside Andrew Mackie and Richard Payten.

The film is written by Fiona Seres and Michael Kinirons and is produced by Naomi Wenck (Dragonfly Pictures) and Macdara Kelleher (Fastnet Films).

Locations will include Sydney, Broken Hill and Canowindra.

“I am always looking for the right script to bring me home to Australia.  The moment I read ‘Strangerland’ I knew this was a film I couldn’t say no to,” said Kidman in a prepared statement.
