Japan Box Office Slumps to Lowest Weekend of the Year

TOKYO — With the ongoing Japan Series — the year’s biggest baseball event — keeping millions glued to their TV sets and the Tokyo International Film Festival (Oct. 23-31) drawing thousands of core movie fans in the capital, the Japanese box office slumped for the weekend of Oct. 25-26.

The number one film, the local romantic drama “Close Range Love,” earned $1.03 million on 91,400 admissions — the year’s lowest figures for the top weekend movie.

Meanwhile, the Brett Ratner-directed adventure epic “Hercules” bowed at number two with $965,000 on 71,800 admissions and 653 screens. Star Dwayne Johnson’s efforts to promote the film in Japan evidently paid off.

Debuting at number three was the Antoine Fuqua thriller “Equalizer” with $721,000 on 60,700 admissions.
