Jafar Panahi, Mostofa Sarwar Farooki Among APSA-MPA Award Winners

BRISBANE, Australia — Celebrated Bangladesh director Mostofa Sarwar Farooki (“Television”) and Iran’s Jafar Panahi were among the recipients of a $100,000 of bursaries presented to Asian film makers Thursday by the Motion Picture Association.

The four 2014 MPA Academy Film Fund grants of US$25,000 were announced at the 8th annual Asia Pacific Screen Awards ceremony in Brisbane, Australia.

The prize winners were selected by Australian distributor Andrew Pike, China’s Zoe Chen of Ruddy Morgan Organization (China) and Sheila Timothy (Indonesia), producer and president of the Association of Indonesian Film Producers (APROFI).

Farooki won for his project “No Land’s Man,” a dark satirical drama, about religious persecution. Last month it was named best project at the Film Bazaar co-production market in Goa, India.

Panahi won for his project “Flower” (Goul”), a challenging drama drawn from real life about the plight of disabled people in Iran. It will be directed by his son Panah Panahi.

Israel’s Dror Moreh won for “Corridors of Power,” a confronting documentary examination of how the world’s political leaders have responded to reports of mass killings and genocide in recent decades.

Danish film-maker Signe Byrge Sorensen (“The Act of Killing”) also won for her upcoming documentary “On Screen Off Record” which charts the citizen journalist movement in Syria.
