Indian ‘Intouchables’ Remake Sets Mohit Suri as Director

French comedy licensed for makeover in Asia, Latin America.

HONG KONG – Mohit Suri has been set as director of the Indian remake of French hit “The Intouchables.”

Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and Guneet Monga’s Sikhya Entertainment are to produce the Hindi-language retread, licensed in February from France’s Gaumont.

Johar announced the appointment of Suri via his Twitter account.

Suri is best known for his suspense thrillers, including the upcoming “Ek Villain,” but will turn his hand for the first time to comedy. He hails from the Bhatt film Bollywood dynasty and counts Mahesh Bhatt as an uncle and rising acting talent Emraan Hashmi as a cousin.

The 2011 original French pic was directed by Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano and has grossed over $427 million worldwide.

With credits ranging from Anurag Kashyap’s “Gangs of Wasseypur” to Michael Winterbottom’s “Trishna,” Monga has achieved the status of India’s leading independent producer. She produced last year’s Cannes sensation “Lunchbox,” which Johar, who is a major TV celebrity as well as a top producer and director, boarded as presenter.

Other remake pacts on “Intouchables” have been signed with Brazil’s Paris Filmes and Turkey’s Calinos, while a possible deal with The Weinstein Company is in negotiation.
