MUMBAI — Sony Pictures Entertainment is to release “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” in India on May 1, a day ahead of the pic’s North American outing.

The company said it had moved the Indian release up by a day from May 2, in order to take advantage of a public holiday on May 1 across most Indian states. The release also falls in a period when most schools and holidays are taking a break.

The release will include English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu versions presented in 2D, 3D and Imax 3D.

2012’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” had the widest release of any Hollywood film in the country. It still holds the record for the biggest opening weekend at  rupees 340 million ($5.67 million). The franchise has grown release-on-release with the final box office of “The Amazing Spider-Man” at $14.7 million, some three times of that of the first “Spider-Man” film in 2002.

“Spider-Man” is licensed to Sony by Marvel Entertainment.
