LONDON — Disney Studios India is teaming with “Lagaan” director Ashutosh Gowariker for “Mohenjo Daro,” a period adventure and love story set during the Indus Valley Civilization.
Hrithik Roshan, star of Fox Star Studios India’s upcoming “Knight and Day” remake “Bang Bang,” is in the lead alongside Pooja Hegde, who makes her Hindi language debut after roles in and Telugu.
Shooting will start in South Africa in October.
Gowariker, who also produces, specializes in period pieces. His “Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India,” set during the days of the British Raj and starring Aamir Khan, won an Oscar nomination for foreign-language film and was a massive box office success. Another Gowariker hit, “Jodhaa Akbar,” starring Roshan, a co-production with Disney India forerunner UTV, was set in the times of the Mughal Empire.

The spinner police car in 1982’s “Blade Runner,” the light cycles of “Tron,” “futuristic Las Vegas” in “Blade Runner 2049” and the “USS Sulaco” in “Aliens” are indelible images of cinema, all from the imagination of the late Syd Mead, who died last month at the age of 86.
