Disney India Expands Release Slate

HONG KONG – Disney will this year release seven Hollywood titles in India through its market-leading Disney UTV subsidiary. A further four Indian movies will also go out under the Disney brand.

Disney UTV will release “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Maleficent,” “Into The Woods,” “Saving Mr Banks,” 3D titles “Planes 2 – Fire & Rescue” and “Guardians of the Galaxy,” and the seemingly made for India movie “Million Dollar Arm.”

“Arm” (pictured) features John Hamm and Alan Arkin alongside Suraj Sharma (“Life of Pi”) and Aasif Mandri in a story where baseball scouts seek to recruit Indian cricket players to play in the U.S. It features John Hamm and Alan Arkin

In total the Indian unit will handle 26 pictures, including 14 Hindi movies, 7 English-language studio movies, 4 in Tamil and one in Telugu.

Disney previously announced that it regards three films on its Hindi-language slate “P.K.,” “ABCD2,” and “Jagga Jasoos” as family friendly films with cross-over appeal that will be labeled as Disney films, not UTV titles. It has now added a fourth “Khoobsurat,” a remake of 1999 crime caper movie of the same title about a kind-hearted con-man.

“The studio is all set to gun for an even bigger piece of the Box Office pie with a power packed slate of releases, featuring the biggest stars in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Hollywood. At the same time, the studio is committed to continue to push the envelope, with concept driven films showcasing young new talent in front of the camera and behind it,” said Amrita Pandey, VP and head, theatrical, television & digital distribution – studio, Disney UTV, in a statement.

Last year it handled “Iron Man 3” the highest grossing Hollywood film of the year in India, as well as “Chennai Express,” which was also a B.O. record breaker, as well as art-house titles “Ship of Theseus” and “The Lunchbox.”
