‘Classmate’ Keeps China Box Office Lead

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" has Hollywood's best opening of 2014 in Middle Kingdom

HONG KONG –Chinese-language films took the top three places at the mainland Chinese box office, though “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” delivered a record setting opening and claimed fourth spot from a single day of business.

Romance, “My Old Classmate” (pictured) held on to top spot for the second week with a powerhouse $34.6 million performance. That compares with its $17.7 million three day score, which nevertheless earned it top spot. After 10 days the roll call for “Classmate” is a cumulative $52.3 million.

That was enough to keep new entrant “The Great Hypnotist” in second place with a $22.3 million five day performance.

It also pushed Donnie Yen-starring Hong Kong-China co-production “Ice Man 3D” into third place with a $10.5 million second week and a 10 day cume of $22 million.

The week running from Monday April 28 to Sunday May 4 spanned the important May Day holiday (‘Labor Day’) and the end of the latest ‘blackout’ period when Hollywood films are not allowed to be released. As such, “Spider Man 2” was released only on Sunday, May 4.

With some 39% of available screenings and a large IMAX rollout that gave it some of the priciest average tickets of the week, “Spider-Man 2” snared $9 million in its opening gambit, the highest this year for a foreign film. Including previews the total is $9.75 million.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier” soldiered on to good effect, claiming $7.58 million in its fifth week, down only 17% compared with $9.03 million previously. It remains the year’s highest grossing Hollywood film in China, with a 31 day cumulative of $116 million.

“Rio 2,” “The Outback,” “Transcendence,” Hong Kong’s “That Demon Within” and “Zambezia” filled out the rest of the top 10.

Overall the week was worth $59.2 million (RMB370 million), a drop of 14% compared with last year’s holiday week, when both “Iron Man 3” and local hit “So Young” were battling it out.
