Rights to the film were acquired by Cai Chang International in a deal with sales agent Fortissimo Films. The deal comes only days before the Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan, in which the film is the most nominated title.
“Black Coal” will become one of the first titles to enter Taiwan as part of an expansion of the island’s ten films per year quota restrictions on mainland Chinese movies. The extension exempts movies which have won the best film or best director awards at the Cannes, Berlin or Venice festivals.
Cai Chang is expected to release the film in early 2015.
The Golden Horse Awards will be announced on Sunday.
