Patrick Dempsey Snags Snazzy Micro-Compound

The inestimable Lucy Spillerguts and the tireless Yolanda Yakketyyak both told us that it was Patrick Dempsey — a man otherwise known as the beau-hunky Dr. McDreamy on “Grey’s Anatomy” — and his makeup artist wife, Jillian, who very quietly and via blind trust paid $1.9 million for an award-winning contemporary micro-compound about a mile east of Venice Beach.

The original, 1950s bungalow was made over in the mid-2000s by Touraine Richmond Architects into a modern-minded one-bedroom apartment and a separate, decidedly minimalist office suite with private entrance. The architects managed, on the puny 3,900-square-foot lot, to add a boxy, three-story second residence that’s sheathed in corrugated metal punctuated with triangular glass cutouts and linked to the original structure by a gated, two-car carport.

The simply if expensively fitted and kitted second house has a sexy, glass-walled living-dining-kitchen space on the ground floor that opens to several small patios and courtyards. The second-floor bedroom leads out to a chain-link-fenced terrace atop the carport and, up on the top floor, the master bedroom has a 300-square-foot terrace.

Mister and Missus Dempsey have owned several homes in Los Angeles, but primarily reside in a cavernous yet comfortable, Frank Gehry-designed residence on five gated and private acres in the foothills above Malibu’s Zuma Beach. Originally built in the late ’60s for acclaimed abstract illusionist artist Ron Davis, the Dempseys purchased the property in 2009 for $7 million and, in case you missed it, had it photographed for the glossy pages of Architectural Digest earlier this year.
