OWNERS: Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw

SIZE: 7,237 square feet, 7 bedrooms, 9 bathrooms

YOUR MAMAS NOTES: Last summer Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw put their ocean front mini compound on Malibu’s quickly disappearing Broad Beach up for lease at $125,000 per month. We don’t know if there were any takers at that price but this summer, it seems, the Hollywood aristocrats are feeling a mite more optimistic and have put the fully shingled, semi-Craftsman style mansion on a generous double lot up for least at a significantly higher $150,000 per month.

The seven bedroom and nine bathroom main house and a semi-detached two bedroom guest house wrap around a central courtyard with swimming pool and attached spa. The upper level master suite, in addition to luxurious facilities and direct access to the ocean view deck, has a private library and massage room that overlooks the ocean. Somewhere, as to be expected for a Tinseltower of Mister Spielberg’s success and financial means, there’s a state-of-the-art movie theater.

Numerous banks of transom-topped French doors on the lower level open the back of main residence to a stone terrace that spans the full width of the house. An equally generous number of French doors also open the upper level private family quarters to a full-width deck with elevated whitewater views.

The back patios give way to a sandy pathways that meanders through sea grass dunes towards a massive rock revetment that makes a valiant effort to keep the relentless tide from washing up closer to the house and further eroding what little beach is left along Broad Beach Road.

Broad Beach has long suffered from a serious erosion problem—the result being a long rock revetment, installed at the homeowners’ expense, that’ intended to keep the pounding surf out of their backyards and living rooms. However, the erosion issue doesn’t keep the enormously rich from buying multi-million dollar homes along the quickly evaporating beach where other wealthy and/or high profile homeowners along Broad Beach inlclude Pierce Brosnan, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, Steve Levitan, Dustin Hoffman, Danny DeVito and Rhea Pearlman, Ray Romano, Avi Arad, Jami Gertz, Steve Lawrence (and the late) Eydie Gourmet, Eric Smidt, and Ken Ehrlich.

Mister Spielberg and Miz Capshaw’s primary residence is a 5+ acre hillside compound in the upper section of the ritzy Riviera area of Pacific Palisades. They also own a substantial equestrian facility in Mandeville Canyon just below Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner’s estate. On the east coast they own a Gwathmey Siegel-designed co-op at the dignified San Remo bulding on Central Park West. Out in the Hamptons they own a Gwathmey Siegel designed compound on Georgica Pond in East Hampon that’s just a few doors down the nearly six acre pond-frond spread education oriented philanthropist Courtney Sale Ross is (allegedly) in contract to sell to billionaire trophy property collector David Geffen for a price this property gossip has been told is just above $50 million.
