Ringo Starr Puts Bucolic Estate Up for Sale

SELLERS: Ringo Starr and Barbara Bach
LOCATION: Cranleigh, Surrey, U.K.
PRICE: said to be around £15 million to £20 million
SIZE: 18,332 square feet, 8 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms

YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: Although it’s been listed on the open market for a minute already, Your Mama only just heard word from London-based informant Flower Perfectbush that legendary former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr has his palatial estate on the outskirts of the village of Cranleigh, in the scenic and bucolically swank home country of Surrey, up for sale at an undisclosed price rumored and reported to be “anything from £10 million to £20 million.” (Circumstantial digital evidence this property gossip turned up suggests the asking price is in the immediate vicinity of £15 million.)

Mister Starr and his former Bond girl wife, Barbara Bach, purchased the 201-acre spread, dubbed Rydinghurst, in 1999 for around £2 million. They subsequently had the Grade-II listed, red-brick Jacobean manor house worked over by much-lauded and applauded London-based interior designer and international bon vivant Nicky Haslam.

Listing details show the main manse has eight bedrooms and seven bathrooms in a regally commodious 18,332-square-feet. There are no fewer than five reception rooms, including a cavernous drawing with a massive walk-in fireplace, a formal dining room, a library and a ballroom-sized family room with fireplace and tracery ceiling detail. The custom-designed ground floor eat-in kitchen is attached to a recently added conservatory that opens to a broad terrace with long views across the pastoral demesne. There’s a “treatment room” on the second floor — whatever that is — and, on the uppermost floor, tucked up under the steep roof and pointed gables, there’s a kitchen/sitting room and a home theater.

A sky-lit leisure complex was added by the Starrs and comes complete with an indoor swimming pool and spa under a midnight blue roof dotted with appear to be glow in the dark stars. The complex also includes an air-conditioned fitness room, steam room, showers and changing rooms.

Interestingly enough, while the mansion has been restored and extensively updated and upgraded, listing details imply air conditioning my be limited to the formal living room — the drawing room in Brit-speak, the master bedroom and the fitness room while the kitchen and conservatory have tootsie-warming under floor heating.

The property is dotted with a variety of additional structures that include a gatehouse and a coach house plus and a couple more cottages for caretakers and/or guests. Equestrian facilities encompass an indoor riding ring and extensive manicured formal gardens give way to well-maintained parklands, a private lake and a helipad because — let’s be honest, children — wouldn’t you have a helipad, too, if you were Ringo f••••••g Starr?

Mister Starr and Miz Bach told The Sunday Times they’re selling up in Surrey because they don’t spend much time at the estate anymore and The Daily Mail reported they plan to make their primary home in sunny southern California where our research shows they own a privately situated and roomy if hardly huge home in Beverly Hills — bought up in May 1991 for $3.2 million — that’s just below Jennifer Aniston’s old house and next door to a Hal Leavitt-designed stunner once owned by maximalist interior design queen Kelly Wearstler and later Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi-DeGeneres.

The rock ‘n’ roll royals also own an approximately 3,200-square-foot cabin-style home on about 16 acres along the Roaring Fork River in Woody Creek, CO, near Aspen, that they picked up in late 1991 for $1.164 million and unsuccessfully attempted to sell in 2010 for $4.5 million and again in late 2013 and the first half of 2014 at $3.85 million.
