YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: We first heard word by way of an unexpected early morning digital missive from a gal who calls herself Shanda Lear but it, turns out, was the fine folk at 6sqft who first revealed that Michelle Williams heaved her ivy-covered townhouse on a tree-lined street in Brooklyn’s leafy and just about fully gentrified Boerum Hill ‘hood up for sale on the open market with a $7.5 million price tag.
The three-time Oscar nominee purchased the simply massed and comely 22-foot wide corner townhouse for $3.6 million in September 2005 when she was still coupled with late actor Heath Ledger. Current listing details indicates the five floor residence — four above ground, one below — has at least five and as many as eight bedrooms, depending on use, and 4.5 bathrooms in about 4,000 square feet.
The carefully and thoroughly renovated residence casually and — in the property gossip’s humble and meaningless opinion — successfully mixes original and historic features with modern day features and amenities: central air-conditioning throughout; radiant heated wide-plank wood floors in every room; pre-war moldings; custom wood windows; and paneled doors with custom made and absolutely appropriate brass and porcelain hardware.

A narrow staircase in the generous, ground floor entrance hall leads up to a nearly 1,000-square-foot, open-concept living space on the parlor floor. There are 12-foot ceilings, banged up (and radiant heated) wood floors, a hulking, modern-minded fireplace in the living room area, a built-in surround sound system with a pair integrated turntables for, we presume, mixing and scratching. The compact but expensively equipped kitchen at the rear of the loft-like space has marble counter tops on cornflower blue cabinetry, high-quality stainless steel appliances, a walk-in pantry and a sizable center island with three-stool snack counter.
There are two good-sized guest/family bedrooms — one with en suite bathroom — on the third floor as well as a (second) hall bathroom, large laundry room and, between the two bedrooms, a cozy — and to die for — library lined floor-to-ceiling on two opposite walls with lamp-lit bookshelves filled with actual books.
The multi-room master suite encompasses the entire fourth floor with full-width bedroom, a fitted walk-in closet as large as a small Manhattan studio apartment, a separate office/nursery/dressing room, and a vintage style bathroom with black and white marble checkerboard floor, antique double pedestal sink, an extra-long claw-footed soaking tub, separate shower stall and a towel warming rack.
Along with the main entrance, the ground floor has two small bedrooms separated by a small hall bathroom and, at the rear, a roomy and wired-up media room that opens to a tiny courtyard breezeway and semi-detached three-car garage. That’s right, buckaroos, Miz Williams’ Brooklyn townhouse has a private three-car garage, a hideously desirable luxury as anyone who’s ever kept a car in New York City well knows. (Note: One bay of the garage is described in digital marketing materials as a “a climate controlled recreation room” but we imagine it wouldn’t be difficult to convert it to a temperature controlled garage if the next owner so chose.)
French doors in the kitchen open to a short bridge that spans the wee courtyard off the ground floor media room and allows for convenient and direct access to a rooftop terrace atop the garage. There are high walls for privacy, irrigated planters, a water feature and built-in seating under a vine-draped shade structure with corrugated metal roof. What’s better, we ask, than the sound of rain drops on a metal roof during a mid-summer shower? Not long after Miz Williams bought her Brooklyn townhouse, her former mate and baby daddy Heath Ledger paid $2.3 million for a celebrity pedigreed pad in the Hollywood Hills. The two-bedroom and two-bathroom residence, which is often referred to in real estate circles as “The Tree House” due to its super-private location in the treetops on a steep hillside, was previously owned by flamboyant (and deceased) furniture designer Guy LeValley Chaddock who sold it to Ellen DeGeneres in 2004 for $1.275 million. Miz DeGeneres, as is her real estate way, gave the place a thorough but fast makeover and sold it the following year for $2.1 million to a noted movie poster designer and producer (David Weissman) who, in turn, flipped it the following year (2006) for $2.3 million to Heath Ledger. Six or so months after Mister Ledger’s 2008 overdose in New York City, the house was sold for $2.5 million to hunky actor Adrian Bellani who eventually sold the house (in May 2012) for $2.5 million to its current owner, young “Hunger Games” actor Josh Hutcherson.
