Yahoo Hires Netflix Exec Mike Kail

Yahoo has recruited Mike Kail, previously head of information-technology operations at Netflix, to be chief information officer and SVP of infrastructure.

At Yahoo, Kail will lead Yahoo’s IT and data-center operations, reporting to CEO Marissa Mayer.

“Mike has the perfect combination of experience and vision to lead our IT and infrastructure to even greater global reach and scale,” Mayer said in a statement, adding that Yahoo engaged in an “intensive search” for the right exec.

Yahoo has suffered at least two outages of its email service over the past year. An interruption in February came after a five-day outage in December 2013, while Yahoo in January said some email accounts had been compromised by a coordinated attack.

On Tuesday, Cablevision Systems named David Dibble, who had previously been in charge of Yahoo’s global infrastructure before stepping aside last year to become an adviser, as chief technology officer.

Prior to joining Netflix in 2011, Kail was VP of IT operations at social-analytics firm Attensity, responsible for the Americas data center operations team. He also has worked in IT management positions at Internet-device maker Chumby as well as Networkcar.com and Nexprise.com.
