NBC ‘Today’ to Livestream Digital-Only Musical Performance with Phillip Phillips

NBC’s “Today” morning program will bow a digital-exclusive musical performance, featuring singer Phillip Phillips, on Tuesday.

Carson Daly, host of the show’s social-media offshoot, “The Orange Room,” will lead an hour-long special kicking off Tuesday, Sept. 16, beginning at 7:20 a.m. Eastern. The digital coverage, to stream live on Today.com, will feature an acoustic performance from Phillips — best known for his hit single “Home” — singing “Raging Fire,” as well as special guest appearances.

According to the Peacock, portions of “The Orange Room Show” will simulcast live on “Today,” but Phillips’ performance of “Raging Fire” and the full hour will be carried exclusively online.

During the 9 a.m. ET hour on “Today,” Phillips will appear on the telecast, when he is scheduled to perform his new single “Unpack Your Heart.”

Event is being staged to mark the one-year anniversary of the Orange Room, the effort by “Today” extend the program’s reach to younger audiences via social media. Throughout one-hour stream, Carson will look back at the Orange Room’s biggest headlines and most memorable moments since its debut, and will invite viewers to share photos using the hashtag #SeeingOrange.

In addition, “Today” hosts and producers will take live questions from the Orange Room and Twitter, and submitted photos may be featured throughout the TV coverage.

“Today” has hosted livestreamed events before, but Tuesday will be its first geared around a musical performance and the first time the Orange Room is hosting its own web show. In March and July of this year, the program hosted a livestreamed event for the “Fresh Cooks Live” series, in which cooking demos aired live on TV and were streamed simultaneously on Today.com.
