Judy McGrath, former CEO of MTV Networks, has been elected to Amazon.com’s board of directors effective Oct. 1, the company said.

McGrath also was appointed to the Amazon board’s leadership development and compensation committee, according to an SEC filing Friday.

Since June 2013, McGrath has been president of Astronauts Wanted: No Experience Necessary, a digital-content joint venture between McGrath and Sony Music Entertainment. She had run Viacom’s MTV Networks from July 2004 until May 2011, and had been part of the startup team that launched the music cabler in 1981.

McGrath joins the Amazon board as the e-commerce giant is significantly expanding its original content productions, to compete with Netflix and other subscription-video players. During the third quarter of 2014, Amazon said it expects to spend more than $100 million on original series and pilots.

With her appointment to the Amazon board, McGrath received a restricted stock grant of 2,520 shares of common stock to vest in three equal annual installments beginning on Aug. 15, 2015.
