HBO’s “The Leftovers” was co-created by Lindelof, the creative force behind “Lost,” and Tom Perrotta (“Little Children”) based on Perrotta’s novel of the same name. In “Leftovers,” 2% of the world’s population abruptly disappears without explanation, forcing survivors to struggle to understand what happened.

“The Leftovers,” set three years after the mysterious purge, takes place in the fictional New York suburb of Mapleton. Series stars Justin Theroux, Amy Brenneman, Christopher Eccleston, Liv Tyler, Chris Zylka, Margaret Qualley, Carrie Coon, Emily Meade, Amanda Warren, Ann Dowd, Michael Gaston, Max Carver, Charlie Carver and Annie Q.

The series is produced for HBO by White Rabbit in association with Warner Bros. Television, with Lindelof serving as showrunner.

The point of the free sampling of the episode — which is not unusual — is to prompt viewers to sign up for HBO through their pay-TV provider.
