‘Frozen,’ ‘Game of Thrones,’ Robin Williams, Beyoncé Among Facebook’s 2014 Most-Discussed Topics

Disney’s blockbuster “Frozen” was the most-discussed movie on Facebook in the U.S. for 2014, while HBO’s “Game of Thrones” topped the list of TV shows users discussed on the social-media service ahead of Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black” and AMC’s “The Walking Dead.”

Disney theme parks also scored as No. 1 on Facebook’s list of the most checked-in places for the year among U.S. users, beating out Universal Studios Hollywood and NYC’s Times Square.

Meanwhile, actor and comedian Robin Williams, who committed suicide in August, was the third-most discussed topic overall in the U.S., after the global Ebola virus outbreak and the “ice bucket challenge” viral-video phenomenon in support of ALS research, according to Facebook. Worldwide, the 2014 FIFA World Cup was the most talked-about topic.

Beyoncé led the list of most-discussed entertainment celebrities on Facebook, followed by Pharrell Williams, Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift.

Facebook is not disclosing the actual data behind its top 10 lists for 2014. The company compiled the rankings based on how frequently a topic was mentioned in Facebook posts made between January and December 2014. As of the end of September, Facebook had 1.35 billion monthly active users worldwide, of which 206 million were in the U.S. and Canada.
