Facebook’s website and mobile apps on Wednesday were briefly knocked offline at about 3:45 p.m. Eastern, with the services resuming about 20 minutes later.
The site previously has had more extended outages, most recently in early August. As of June 30, Facebook had 1.32 billion monthly active users worldwide, up 14% year over year, and 1.07 billion mobile active monthly users, an increase of 31%.
In a statement, Facebook said an error occurred while technicians were making “an infrastructure configuration change,” which briefly prevented access to the service.
“We immediately discovered the issue and fixed it, and everyone should now be able to connect,” a Facebook rep said. “We apologize for the inconvenience and will thoroughly investigate this issue so we can learn from it and ensure that Facebook is there when people need it.”
