The newly created post calls for Shapiro to work on companywide development of digital businesses and opportunities to reach audiences via alternative platforms and direct-to-consumer distribution models. He starts at the Peacock on Dec. 8 and reports to NBCU exec VP Cesar Conde.

His leadership will be a key asset as we continue to navigate the evolving marketplace.”
Shapiro comes to NBCU after spending the past two years at Participant Media, where he launched the company’s Pivot cable channel in August 2013. At Pivot Shapiro steered all aspects of the startup venture, from negotiating carriage deals for the indie outlet with pay-TV providers to overseeing the development of original series such as Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s “HitRecord on TV” and the nightly yakker “TakePart Live.”
Before Pivot, Shapiro had a long run as a marketing and programming exec at Cablevision’s Rainbow Media. He was president of IFC and Sundance Channel from 2008 to 2012, spearheading the expansion of both channels with original programming and transitioning IFC to a traditional ad-supported model.
Shapiro’s resume also includes serving as senior VP of marketing for Court TV and as CEO and co-founder of marketing/advertising agency FourFront, which counted HBO, Microsoft, A&E and Universal Pictures among its clients.
At present Shapiro serves as chairman of the board of Ghetto Film School, a non-profit org in the South Bronx that offers educational and outreach programs. He was a key player in the launch of the nation’s first public high school devoted to film studies and also helped Ghetto Film School expand into Los Angeles. He is also an adjunct professor at NYU’s Stern School of Business, where he teaches a course in TV management.
