Vice News to Expand Online Network to 7 Countries with Local-Language Editions

Vice Media, the youth-skewing media company that touts its non-mainstream street cred, announced that it will roll out local-language editions of its YouTube and Internet-based news channel in seven countries over the next six months.

Vice News will launch in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Australia, Brazil and Mexico, with editorial and video-production newsrooms in each country, the New York-based company announced at its U.K. upfront event Friday.

The announcement comes after Vice received $500 million in funding from A+E Networks and venture-capital firm Technology Crossover Ventures.

Since launching in March 2014 in the U.S. and U.K., Vice News claims that it has been the fastest-growing news channel in YouTube’s history with nearly 150 million video views and more than 1 million subscribers to date. YouTube has featured Vice News in an ad campaign across digital, TV, outdoor and other media.

Vice News’ mission is to uncover “under-reported stories around the world,” with the company tubthumbping its gonzo approach to journalism that uses tools like live-streaming video, drones and Google Glass. The channel has recently covered the political crisis in Ukraine, the fight against ISIS, the current protests in Hong Kong and the ebola-virus epidemic in West Africa.

The company said YouTube will continue to serve as the “flagship” for Vice News’ video distribution strategy. In addition, it will continue to be integrated across other Google platforms, including Google+, Maps, Chrome and a Vice News Android app.
