10 Comics to Watch: Nathan Fielder’s Dumb Starbucks Stunt Goes Viral

10 COMICS TO WATCH: 'Nathan for You' prankster returns to second season having grown his audience online

Between seasons 1 and 2 of Comedy Central’s “Nathan for You,” its creator, Nathan Fielder, had some down time, during which he became unnaturally obsessed with psychics. He studied them, researched them and later created an entire online presence around a fake psy- chic for himself — complete with videos and a live chat feature.

Fielder doesn’t do anything halfway. On “Nathan for You,” he comes up with odd ideas to help businesses stay afloat, as when he persuaded a gas station’s owner to charge only $1.45 per gal- lon — after rebate. To redeem the rebate, howev- er, Fielder required that people hand-deliver a form to the top of a mountain after answering a series of riddles and spending the night in a tent. A small handful of people actually went for it, resulting in a heartwarming night of strangers bonding over more than just saving a few bucks.

“I like finding situations where you have no idea how someone is going to react,” Fielder says. Fans are just as devoted to Fielder’s cause.

They spent time between the two seasons discov- ering Fielder’s show online, building a base that went viral when a stunt from season 2 — a new coffee shop called Dumb Starbucks — attracted national attention and lines out the door.

“My only gauge about what will be funny is what makes me laugh,” Fielder says.
