‘Game of Thrones’ VFX Supervisor Rainer Gombos Joins VR Firm 8i

Visual effects supervisor Rainer Gombos, best known for his Emmy award-winning work on “Game of Thrones,” will be joining virtual reality firm 8i this week as executive creative director.

“I am thrilled to be joining 8i’s team of visionaries and expert technicians in developing what is clearly the future of content viewing. This technology is one of the biggest evolutionary steps in communication and storytelling since the invention of film,” said Gombos in a statement.

Known for its prevalence in the start-up field, the New Zealand-based 8i focuses on breakthroughs in virtual reality. The company is currently in development of its 8iVR project, an advancement of 3D technology, and recently closed a $1 million seed investment round.

Gombos, who appeared on Variety’s 2014 Below-the-Line Impact Report, received his second Emmy nomination this year for his work on “Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey.” He also worked on 2013’s “Beautiful Creatures.”

“8i is excited to have one of the world’s most sought-after VFX supervisors on board,” said 8i chief executive Linc Gasking in a statement. “Gombos is a fantastic complement to 8i’s outstanding creative team and its vision of creating extraordinary experiences for our clients in 8iVR.”
