France’s Philippe Gas to Head Shanghai Disneyland

HONG KONG – Frenchman, Philippe Gas has been appointed as general manager of the new Shanghai Disney Resort.

Gas joins from Euro Disney in Paris, where he was President of Euro Disney S.A.S., the management company of both Euro Disney S.C.A., the holding company, and Euro Disney Associes S.C.A., the operator of Disneyland Paris.

He will be replaced in Paris by Tom Wolber. The linked announcements were made by Tom Staggs, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.

“We are very proud that The Walt Disney Company has chosen Philippe, a French top executive, to lead a huge and strategic project such as Shanghai Disney Resort,” said Virginie Calmels, chairman of Euro Disney Supervisory Board.

Gas has been with Disney since 1991 and headed the French park since 2008.

Shanghai Disney Resort is the $5.5 billion dollar theme park that is a joint venture with Shanghai Shendi Group. It is set to open in late 2015.

“We need China to create growth for our company. We need China to be stable and continue to create growth in order to create growth in our company,” said Disney CEO, Bob Iger at a conference in April.

The Shanghai park will be the first Disney operation to feature the “Pirates of the Caribbean’ themed area, called ‘Treasure Cove.’
