LONDON — Speculation in the U.K. is mounting that Rupert Murdoch will come out in support of Scottish independence, ahead of the Sept. 18 referendum on the subject.

In a series of tweets Murdoch, who is the grandson of a Scot, has expressed his pleasure at the increase in support for an end to the union with England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

A recent Tweet stated: “Scots better people than to be dependents of London. Hard choice with real pain for some time. Maybe too much.”

Murdoch’s Scottish newspaper, Scottish Sun, the largest-selling paper north of the border, may be readying itself to come out in favor of independence, according to Guardian media specialist Roy Greenslade, who lists a series of Scottish Sun articles that deride the efforts of the main political parties in London to save the U.K.
