HONG KONG – Japan’s Nippon Television and Nikkatsu and Thailand’s Kantana have established a joint-venture company with activities that will stretch from computer graphics work to animation co-production.

The three companies said new Kantana Japan Corp. will provide visual effects and computer graphics to Japanese clients.

Publicly listed Kantana is the largest post-production and animation firm in Thailand, which is a high-quality, lower-cost hub for film production services that mostly serves Southeast Asia and Greater China.

“We will leverage Kantana Group’s resources to pursue new business opportunities such as co-producing animations. With Southeast Asia as our base, we will endeavor to develop and expand various production-related businesses,” they said in a joint statement.

Kantana has previously extended itself into live action and animated feature production, but with limited success. It may enjoy the stability of a regular partner in future production ventures.

“The establishment of this joint venture is a culmination of Kantana Group’s vision to expand their presence in Japan and the rest of Asia, combined with Nikkatsu’s and Nippon TV’s strategy to develop new businesses in the areas of computer graphics and animation production,” the statement said.
