HAF Project Mart Picks Pang, Mendoza, Benegal

HONG KONG – Asian film-making talent including Brillante Mendoza, Dev Benegal and Jun Robles Lana will line up in March with projects at the Hong Kong Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF).

Some 29 projects will be pitched to co-producers, investors and distributors over a three day period, Mar. 24-26, including four competing for the HAF/Fox Chinese Award, backed by Fox International Productions.

All of the HAF’s factual entries will be eligible for a new documentary prize.

The event takes place in Hong Kong as part of the Entertainment Expo that also incorporates FilMart and the Hong Kong Int’l Film Festival.

The Philippines’ Mendoza, 2009 best director at Cannes for “Kinatay,” has two projects at HAF: narrative feature, “The Embroiderer,” and “The Gay Messiah” a documentary questioning religion and belief.

Also hailing from The Philippines is Jun Robles Lana, whose “Bwakaw” and “Barber’s Tales” were recent hits on the international festival circuit, pitching “Our Father.”

One of Asia’s hottest writing and directing talents Pang Ho-cheung will attend HAF as producer of “A Nail Clipper Romance” by Hong Kong cinematographer-turned-director Jason Kwan.

Indian director Dev Benegal (“Split Wide Open,” and “Road Movie”) attends with comedy “Dead End,” while Taiwan’s Lin Yu-Hsien follows up his hit “Jump! Ashin” with “Follow You.”

The new Fushan Documentary Award is worth US$12,900 (HK$100,000), and is supported by Fushan Features, an ambitious film production and investing company that focuses on documentaries across Hong Kong, China and other Asia.

The winner of the Fox Award will receive a cash prize of HK$100,000 and a development contract with Fox. Other finalists may also be offered a first look agreement.
