The 39th season premiere of “Saturday Night Live” performed just a tick under the previous season, according to preliminary metered-market averages issued Sunday by Nielsen.
The 4.7/12 in metered-market households (2.7/13 in adults 18-49 in the Local People Meters) is a tenth of a rating point behind the 2012 season premiere. But that number is also equal to what the May 18 season finale notched.
“SNL” veteran Tina Fey had guest-hosting duties, which helped offer a sign of stability for an episode featuring the introduction of six new cast members. The season premiere was also helped by multiple cameos from “Breaking Bad” star Aaron Paul.
Last year’s Sept. 15 bow with Seth MacFarlane and Frank Ocean averaged a 4.8/12 in metered market household rating/share (down 6% from a 5.1/13 for 2011 premiere) and a 2.8 rating in 18-49 in markets with People Meters (up 4% from a 2.7 for 2011 premiere).
In Live+7 final numbers for last season, SNL averaged a 3.4 rating in adults 18-49 and 8.3 million viewers overall – on par with the previous two years.
