Simon Fuller Doubles Down in Sports Management

TV mogul behind 'American Idol,' 'Pop Idol' adds Andy Murray, Lewis Hamilton to client roster

British hyphenate Simon Fuller might be best known for creating the “Pop Idol”/“American Idol” franchises, but his entry into sports is also helping build his $573 million fortune.

Fuller has added Wimbledon champion Andy Murray and Formula 1 racer Lewis Hamilton to his XIX Entertainment client roster, seeing them join the likes of the Beckhams, Annie Lennox, Steven Tyler and Carrie Underwood.

While Fuller has been involved in sports and music since the ’90s, it’s his constant presence in the Murray family box at tennis matches, and his rumored courting of Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins and golf pro Rory McIlroy, that suggests he thinks sports is where it’s at.

The 53-year-old Fuller has been responsible for softening Murray’s image, making him more likable to the public. Reports suggest Fuller’s management of the tennis pro could boost the Scot’s fortune from $49 million to $300 million.

Fuller recently formed a partnership with Indian entrepreneur Mahesh Bhupathi to form XIX Globosport, a company that aims to focus on boosting Murray’s interests in the lucrative Middle East and Asian markets.

It’s clear Fuller aims to turn the player into a moneymaking machine. He even allowed the tennis champ to do a fly-on-the-wall BBC documentary “Andy Murray: The Man Behind the Racquet,” which aired after he became the first British male since 1936 to win Wimbledon.
