CANNES — Jeffrey Katzenberg, DreamWorks Animation CEO, was feted as Personality of the Year at Mipcom TV mart, which wrapped Thursday. Katzenberg said he had been surprised to have been offered the award.
“I really do have to admit that when I was told that I would be receiving this award, I actually had a bit of a double take, because you see I’m actually not used to being recognized or honored for my personality,” he said to laughter at the closing night dinner held in his honor at the Carlton Hotel in Cannes.
“Quite frankly, most often it is actually quite the opposite. By example, I have been called impatient, abrasive, aggressive, obsessive, grandiose, pushy, relentless, egotistical, brash, maniacal… and honestly that is just to name a few.”
Katzenberg quoted from a magazine article in which his management style was described as “hyper controlling” and “part Napoleonic, part hopeless dilettante,” among other things.
“So, after so many years of getting press coverage like this, I guess I’d hope you’d understand of all the things that one might conceivably find to honor me, I just never figured ‘personality.’ “
“That said, whatever motivated you to give me the award, I am supremely appreciative, although among my colleagues when they heard this — when they thought I wasn’t looking at them — there was a lot of eye rolling going on,” he said.
