FX imports ‘The Bridge’ with series order

Drama stars Bichir, Kruger as detectives solving serial murder case

FX is crossing “The Bridge,” giving a 13-episode series order to the Scandinavian import that will now get a U.S. imprint.

From exec producers Meredith Stiehm and Elwood Reid, series stars Demian Bichir and Diane Kruger as a pair of detectives – one from the U.S. and the other from Mexico – who work together to hunt down a serial killer.

Series, which was originally titled “Bron” when it was set on the border of Denmark and Sweden, will be produced by Shine America and FX Prods. It will premiere in the summer.

Co-stars include Ted Levine, Annabeth Gish, Thomas M. Wright and Matthew Lillard. The pilot, which wrapped in December, was directed by Gerardo Naranjo.

“For years networks having been trying develop a drama series set on the U.S.-Mexican border without any success. I’m thrilled to say that Meredith Stiehm and Elwood Reid have become the first to crack that creative code and they have done so magnificently,” said FX president John Landgraf. “There have been great films set in that world, but never a great TV series. This one is special. ”

The Bridge” is significant to Shine America, in that it is the shingle’s first scripted series order. Shine America, which produces reality shows such as “MasterChef” and the new Oxygen skein “The Face” and recently named former Disney film topper Rich Ross as CEO, is looking to ramp up programming on the scripted side to increase its output.

Stiehm comes to the series from Showtime’s “Homeland,” where she was a writer and exec producer. Previously, Stiehm was creator of CBS’ “Cold Case” and she also served as a scribe on ABC’s long-running cop drama “NYPD Blue.”

Reid, who worked with Stiehm on “Cold Case,” was most recently a co-exec producer on the Eye’s “Hawaii Five-O.”

Bachir and Kruger are known more for their film roles than TV. Bachir was Oscar-nominated for “A Better Life” and Kruger’s most recent roles include “Farewell, My Queen” and “Inglourious Basterds.”

Once “The Bridge” premieres, FX will have four dramas on the air. “Justified” and freshman series “The Americans” are currently on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, respectively, and “Sons of Anarchy” will return later this year.
