‘Buckwild’ Production Halted After Death of Series Star Shain Gandee

Future of reality show unclear in the wake of Gandee's death

Production on season two of “Buckwild” has shut down after Shain Gandee, one of the stars of the MTV reality series, was found dead over the weekend.

The 21-year-old was discovered along with two others in a car in Kanawha County, W.Va. Local news outlets report that Gandee left a bar late Saturday night with the two others to go “four-wheeling,” an activity featured numerous times on the unscripted program.

“We are shocked and saddened by the terrible news about Shain Gandee, and those involved in this tragic incident,” MTV said in a statement. “We are waiting for more information but at this time, our main concern is for the Gandee family and their friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. Shain had a magnetic personality, with a passion for life that touched everyone he met and we will miss him dearly.”

Kanawha County Commissioner Kent Carper also issued a statement: “This is a very sad and tragic event. We live in a very small community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Gandee family. The full details will be released later by the Kanawha County Sheriff Department.”

Gandee, known by friends and “Buckwild” fans as “Gandee Candy,” was one of nine cast members on the MTV reality show that debuted in January. Skein pulled strong ratings and was renewed for a second season in February.

It is unclear at this time whether the unscripted program will continue. Last week cast member Salwa Amin was arrested on suspicion of drug-related offenses.
