Britney Spears officially off ‘X-Factor’

Judges table remains in flux for Fox musical competition series

The rotating judges panel on “The X Factor” now has an opening: Britney Spears is officially off the show.

Spears put out a statement Friday that she was departing the musical competition series: “I’ve made the very difficult decision not to return for another season. I had an incredible time doing the show and I love the other judges and I am so proud of my teens but it’s time for me to get back in the studio.

“Watching them all do their thing up on that stage every week made me miss performing so much! I can’t wait to get back out there and do what I love most.”

Spears is the second judge to leave over the last few weeks. Epic Records topper L.A. Reid, who was on board for the two seasons the show has been on air, recently left as well to concentrate on his full-time duties.

Nicole Scherzinger, Paula Abdul and Cheryl Cole left after the first season. Demi Lovato, who joined the show in the fall, and exec producer Simon Cowell remain judges.

“The X-Factor” has fallen below expectations for Fox after launching in 2011. Cowell crowed excessively before its premiere how well it would do, but the ratings never lived up to the hype.
