BET Plans ‘Fruitvale’ Special with The Weinstein Company

'Fruitvale Station' showed strong box office returns during its limited release this weekend

Fruitvale Station” will receive a behind the scenes look tonight on BET, as The Weinstein Company sets a halfhour docuspesh on the cable net.

Announcement follows “Fruitvale’s” strong opening box office performance over the weekend, along with increased public interest for the Ryan Coogler film as it debuted concurrently with the climax of the George Zimmerman trial.

Fruitvale Station,” starring Michael B. Jordan, is based on the true story of Oscar Grant, a 22-year-old Bay Area resident who, while unarmed, is shot to death by law enforcement officers. Film picked up kudos at this year’s Sundance Film Fest and has been warmly received by critics.

BET has been a wonderful friend to us, the cast and team behind ‘Fruitvale Station’,” commented TWC COO David Glasser. “Oscar Grant’s story could have easily been forgotten in our 24-hour news cycle, but with this film his story and tragic death will continue to make an impact on people across the country.”

Added Loretha Jones, prez of original programming at BET Networks: “‘Fruitvale Station’ is powerful, moving and will forever be a part of our history. BET Networks is proud to be a partner in this project and share the important truth of the incidents surrounding Oscar Grant that have deeply affected the African American community.”

“Fruitvale Station: The Story of Oscar Grant” will air tonight on BET from 7:30-8 p.m.
