CW’s “Reign,” the sudsy retelling of the life of Mary Queen of Scots, is expanding its court and has cast “Private Practice” and “Judging Amy” alum Amy Brenneman.
A minority as an American in a cast filled with Canadians, Brits and Australians, Brenneman will play Marie de Guise — mother of Adelaide Kane’s Queen Mary and adversary (or perhaps not?) of France’s meddling Queen Catherine de Medici (Megan Follows).
“We’ve been waiting for just the right moment, and the actor, to introduce Mary’s mother – the complicated and fascinating Marie de Guise,” Executive Producer Laurie McCarthy said in a statement. “In a time when women held very little power, Marie ruled a nation under siege. Amy Brenneman’s talent, strength and beauty illuminate even the darker corners of Marie de Guise. Amy’s character will face off with Megan Follows’ character (Catherine de Medici), not to mention her own daughter, Mary (Adelaide Kane). Hearts will break and blood will spill as a major battle of wits ensues.”
