ABC To Condense ‘Dancing With The Stars,’ Restock Tuesdays With ‘S.H.I.E.L.D’

Disney net to add 14 series in all over course of the season

ABC said it would rebuild Tuesday night with the much-anticipated spy drama ‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D’ and condense long-running competition program “Dancing With The Stars” to a single night from two as part of its effort to lure audiences over the course of the 2013-2014 TV season.

The network said it would add 14 new series in all over the course of the programming year.

ABC said ‘Dancing’ would air from 8 p.m.. to 10 p.m. Mondays starting in the fall, to be followed by ‘Castle.’  The dance program’s competition and results aspects will be condensed into a single program.  ‘DWTS,’ which premiered in the summer of June, 2005, is widely recognized as having its best-rated days behind it, despite ABC’s attempts to boost it with editions at different times of the year. ABC said ‘The Bachelor,’ which typically is put on air after ‘DWTS’ finishes its fall run, would return.

With the program removed from Tuesdays, ABC will rebuild the night. The much-anticipated drama ‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D,’ a concept drawn from the Disney-owned comic-book publisher responsible for the ‘Avengers’ film franchise, will kick off the evening at 8 p.m. It will be followed by the half-hour laffer ‘The Goldbergs,’about a 1980s family, at 9, and comedy ‘Trophy Wife,’ starring Malin Akerman and Bradley Whitford, at 9:30. Drama ‘Lucky 7,’ about a group of lottery-pool-sharing co-workers, debuts at 10 p.m.

Wednesdays will include returning dramas ‘The Middle’ at 8 p.m., ‘Modern Family’ at 9 p.m. and second-season drama ‘Nashville’ at 10 p.m. New comedy ‘Back in the Game,’ about a mother and son who move back in with her opinionated father, debuts at 8:30 p.m. while sitcom ‘Super Fun Night’ starring Rebel Wilson, airs at 9:30 p.m. “Suburgatory,” a sitcom that has aired on Wednesdays for two seasons, is slated to return later in the season, though the network did not assign it a specific day or time.

Fantasy spinoff ‘Once Upon A Time In Wonderland’ starts off Thursdays at 8 p.m. followed by stalwarts ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ at 9 p.m. and ‘Scandal’ at 10 p.m.

Friday’s lineup is stocked with returning programs: ‘Last Man Standing’ at 8 p.m., ‘Neighbors’ at 8:30 p.m. (formerly on Wednesdays), ‘Shark Tank’ at 9 p.m. and newsmagazine ’20/20′ at 10 p.m.

Saturdays in the fall will be devoted to college-football telecasts, as has been the case for several seasons.

Sundays will consist of ‘America’s Funniest Homes Videos’ at 7 p.m., followed by ‘Once Upon A Time’ at 8 p.m., ‘Revenge’ at 9 p.m. and ‘Betrayal’ a soapy drama about lovers on opposite sides of a murder investigation, airs at 10 p.m.

ABC said it planned to launch a one-time special, ‘Toy Story of Terror,’ from sister Disney unit Pixar. The program will feature all the characters and original voices from the popular ‘Toy Story’ film series, the network said.

New dramas slated for mid-season include ‘Killer Women,’ starring Tricia Helfer as the sole female in an elite squad of Texas Rangers (and executive produced by ‘Modern Family’ actress Sofia Vegara); ‘Mind Games,’ about two brothers who use psychological manipulation to solve clients’ problems; and ‘Resurrection,’ about a Missouri community that finds its deceased loved ones are returning.  One comedy, ‘Mixology, about the regulars at a chic bar in Manhattan, is also slated for mid-season. ABC said one reality program, ‘The Quest,’ which sends participants on a sort of ‘Amazing Race’-type adventure, is also teed up for the second half of the programming year.
