NATPE Budapest Leads to Global Screen Deals

Buyers target 'Homicide Unit Istanbul,' RTL's 'Heroes'

DRESDEN, Germany — NATPE Budapest proved to be a fruitful market for Global Screen, which has inked a string of deals following the TV bazaar for Central and Eastern Europe buyers.

The Munich-based sales company presold RTL’s event movie “Heroes” to Czech free TV channel Prima TV, and upscale crime series “Homicide Unit Istanbul” was picked up Hungarian broadcaster TV2, which will start airing the show this summer.

Ukraine’s Inter TV bought a package of family movies, including the “The Wild Chicks” franchise.

Reality shows are increasing popular with buyers in the region. Slovak TV Markiza picked up 70 episodes of reality soap “Help, I’m Broke,” which has aired on Germany’s RTL for the past five years.

“Eastern European channels are increasingly searching for ready-made reality soaps instead of buying the format rights only,” Helge Koehnen, a sales manager with Global Screen, said.

Hungarian private channel TV2 had previously licensed “Wham Bam Scam,” another scripted reality show from RTL.

“More deals on soaps and shows are in the pipeline,” Koehnen said.

Other shows attracting interest include docu series “The Great Seaside Resorts” and the family entertainment feature films “Yoko” and “Thor — Legends of Valhalla.” Deals will be announced soon, Global Screen said.
