‘Breaking Bad,’ ‘Modern Family’ win in Monte Carlo

'Letter to Eva' receives miniseries award

“Breaking Bad” took the drama series prize and the show’s Bryan Cranston was named top drama actor at the Golden Nymphs Awards, which were handed out at the Monte Carlo Television Festival Thursday.

The honor for an actress in a drama skein went to Sofie Grabol for Denmark’s “The Killing 3.”

In the comedy series category, “Modern Family” came top, with the show’s Ty Burrell named best actor. Comedy actress kudos went to Tina Fey for “30 Rock.”

Spain’s “Letter to Eva” took the miniseries award, and the show’s Julieta Cardinali was named top actress in a miniseries. The drama, which airs on TVE, centers on a visit to Franco’s Spain by Eva Peron and her attempts to save the life of communist Dona Juana, who had been condemned to death.

The miniseries actor honor went to Ivan Trojan for HBO’s “Burning Bush,” about the suicide of a Czech student in 1969 in protest at the Soviet invasion of his country, and the attempts by a young lawyer to defend the student’s  reputation.

In the TV movie category, circus family drama “Aglaja” took three awards: top TV movie, director for Krisztina Deak, and actress for Eszter Onodi. The show was produced for Magyar RTL in Hungary.

The actor honor went to Arsher Ali for terrorism drama “Complicit,” which was produced for the U.K.’s Channel 4 by Many Rivers Films.

Prince Albert II of Monaco was joined on the red carpet at the awards by guests Robin Tunney, Joe Mantegna, Brenda Strong, Tom Berenger, Patrick Duffy and Giancarlo Esposito, among others.
