‘Borgia’ Thesp Rafael Cebrian: International Star You Should Know

With roles on 'Borgia,' 'Alatriste,' multilingual actor-musician explores new horizons

CLAIM TO FAME

The multitalented Cebrian is co-founder and percussionist for the Monomes, whose music is included in the soundtrack of 2012 Spanish feature toon “Tad, the Lost Explorer.” As an actor, he appears in Spanish sitcom “Los Serrano.”

CROSSING OVER

Cebrian’s fluency in English, Spanish, French and Italian opens doors to roles in Europe and the U.S., says Anne Thomopoulos, executive producer of Canal Plus’ “Borgia,” in which Cebrian has a recurring role. He also appears in Dutch indie romantic comedy “And Me.” Soon, he’ll be seen in “Alatriste,” about a 17th-century soldier and based on the Spanish bestseller by Arturo Perez Reverte.

A DIFFERENT BEAT

For a year, he has hosted “Blackjack,” a bilingual alternative rock music radio program.

EARLY MUSIC MOVES

His father, Juan Luis Cebrian, co-founded El Pais, the leading daily newspaper in Spain, while his mother, Teresa Aranda, was a newscaster-journo for state-backed TVE. But Rafael opted for music, studying classical piano for 13 years.

THE ACTING BUG

Cebrian studied drama every summer at schools in various countries, including Switzerland, France and the U.S. In 2008, he spent a semester at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, where he met his pal and fellow Brown U. alum, Emma Watson.
