SAG-AFTRA Honors ‘Secret Life Of The American Teenager’

Awards to be presented Friday

SAG-AFTRA has given its first American Scene awards to ABC Family and creator Brenda Hampton for “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” Detroit Public Television for “Arab American Stories,” and Universal Music Group for their entire catalog and roster of artists.

The awards will be presented Friday as part of the celebration honoring SAG-AFTRA’s inaugural convention in Los Angeles, with host Mary Hart and musical performance led by Dorian Holley (“The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”).

The American Scene Awards were first established in 1985 by the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. The awards honor union productions that realistically portray the “American scene” by employing the talents of diverse ethnicities, people with disabilities, women, seniors, people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender, and other misrepresented or underrepresented groups.

Past recipients of the AFTRA American Scene Award have included “American Idol,” “Sesame Street” and the Children’s Television Workshop, “Modern Family,” “Parenthood,” “The Voice” and “As the World Turns.”
