NBC Leads Sports Emmy Parade

HBO second with six awards

NBC won 10 kudos at the 34th annual Sports Emmy Awards in New York on Tuesday, part of 23 hauled in by the NBC Sports Group.

HBO was second among individual networks receiving honors from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences with six, followed by NBC Sports Network with four and ESPN, MLB Network, TBS and TNT with three apiece.

Among the Peacock’s prizes were awards for top live sports special (Super Bowl XLVI),  live sports series (“Sunday Night Football”) and live event turnaround (the 2012 Olympic Games). Sam Flood and Mark Lazarus exec produced the football efforts, while Jim Bell shepherded the Olympics coverage. The Summer Olympics generated five Emmys overall.

HBO earned honors for such projects as top sports documentary (“Namath”) and edited anthology sports series (“Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel”).

ESPN won the outstanding sports journalism Emmy for its “E:60” report entitled “Beitar Jerusalem,” reported by Jeremy Schaap.

Individual Emmys in various on-camera categories included Bob Costas, Al Michaels, Charles Barkley, Cris Collinsworth, Pierre McGuire, Tom Verducci.
