Directing the now Emmy-nominated “Modern Family” episode “Arrested” may have been a dream come true for Gail Mancuso, but it dealt with a parent’s — modern or not — nightmare. It found Sarah Hyland’s character Haley arrested for underage drinking and Nolan Gould’s Luke hospitalized for an allergic reaction.
Mancuso says she knew the episode was special from the get-go because the script featured both tender moments and comedic gems. “It was well integrated set-wise and story-wise,” she says. “What I loved about the script the most was that runners (running jokes) were set up in the beginning of the episode that were followed through perfectly.”
