Backstage at the 2013 Emmy Awards

The Variety editorial staff’s favorite moments from backstage at the 2013 Emmy Awards:

Supporting actress in a comedy winner Merritt Wever of “Nurse Jackie” on her short acceptance speech:

“I wanted to thank everyone at Showtime … I wanted to thank Edie Falco very badly. It’s hard to do those … I’m scared. I mean, I have therapy next week.”

Supporting actor in a comedy winner Tony Hale of “Veep” tries to take questions from the press:

“I don’t even know my left from my right right now.”

Lead actress in a comedy actress Julia Louis Dreyfus, who has received several Emmys, on if this trophy means something special:

“I’ve lost 10 times, as a matter of fact, and it is delicious to win.”

“The Big Bang Theory’s” Jim Parsons on what it feels like to win an Emmy:

“That thing that I can compare it to is that feeling you get when you narrowly miss getting into a car accident.”

“30 Rock’s” Tina Fey (who shared a writing for a comedy series Emmy with Tracey Wigfield) on how she thinks Cecily Strong will do on “Saturday Night Live’s” “Weekend Update”:

“For ‘Update,’ you have to be comfortable being yourself on camera and I think she will be great at that.”

Henry Bromell’s wife Sarah, who accepted the late scribe’s Emmy for writing for a drama series:

“Henry’s father was a CIA station chief. Of course, he won’t talk about anything …”

Mark Burnett of “The Voice” speaking about beating rival “The Amazing Race” for the reality competition Emmy:

“It feels pretty good to beat the show that I don’t produce that people think I produce.”

“Breaking Bad’s” Anna Gunn, who received the supporting actress in a drama trophy, on the Sklyer haters:

“What the Skyler haters do, they do. It doesn’t have anything to do with me.”

“The Newsroom’s” Jeff Daniels, when a reporter for AARP questions him about his lead actor in a drama acceptance speech:

“OK, let me say I flew out special for that award. You gave me a little golden Barcalounger … I use it to hold my meds.”

Brit Abi Morgan, who received an Emmy for writing the miniseries “The Hour” on how she’ll get her trophy home:

“I’m leaving all my luggage and I’m just going to take this home.”

“The Colbert Report’s” Stephen Colbert was humble when he spoke for his staff in regards to their writing for a variety series Emmy:

“I’m grateful Jon took the summer off during voting period … Maybe that helped … Jon Stewart’s streak is not broken. He is an executive producer of this show.”

“Breaking Bad’s” Vince Gilligan on the competition between his winning drama series and online programs like “House of Cards” on Netflix:

“Television has changed a lot in six years … and I think a big part of it is streaming video on demand … I think Netflix kept us on the air.”
