HONG KONG — Multinational broadcaster Fox International Channels has launched a once every two week entertainment news show focusing on the Chinese-language film biz.
Presented by Hong Kong movie producer Helen To, the half-hour “SCM Cine” began airing this weekend on SCM, the FIC channel previously known as Star Chinese Movies. It will be rebroadcast further afield on other Fox channels in Singapore, Australia, the U.S. and Canada.
The company says the show is the latest leg of its “Go Local!” drive to dispense with a pan-regional approach and become more focused on individual market segments.
“Chinese content is on the rise and there is a demand for quality productions, not just in Asia but globally. FIC is catering to this demand by producing more original Chinese content,” a company spokesman told Variety. Currently it produces some 1,000 hours of Chinese content annually, mostly variety shows and TV dramas specifically for the Taiwan market.
Previously FIC unveiled two other Chinese, film-skewed “Go Local!” initiatives. In March it partnered with Hong Kong’s Emperor Motion Pictures and actor-producer Chapman To to produce an initial slate of five low-budget movies, costing some $775,000 (HK$6 million) per title. Emperor will handle theatrical distribution and international sales, SCM the first broadcast rights.
Last year FIC and SCM partnered with facilities and production group Salon Films, CITVC, and Japanese talent agency-production giant Yoshimoto Kogyo to invest in series of micro-budget films. Both initiatives are pitched as a means of nurturing up-and-coming film talent in Asia.
The new “SCM Cine” show kicked off with a background interview with Chapman To; a “Cine-pedia” slot presented by Helen To; and celebrity appearances by performer Josie Ho and veteran producer Raymond Chow.
“SCM Cine” was given the green-light by Cora Yim, VP of Chinese channels at FIC Asia, and by Joon Lee, FIC Asia’s senior VP of content and communications.
