Russell Simmons’ ADD Comedy Live Supports Minority Comics

No joke about it: Russell Simmons is determined to celebrate more black comics. The hip hop artist and producer/co-creator of the HBO’s former “Def Comedy Jam” series has created the ADD Comedy Live stand-up event every Wednesday at the Chinese Theatre’s Inside Jokes Comedy Club.

Now finishing its week, the October 30 show was hosted by “Think Like a Man’s” Tony Rock (pictured above with Simmons) and featured up-and-comers like “Workaholics” actor Erik Griffin and “Last Comic Standing” finalist Ron G.

“The idea is to have a lot of industry come out and see a lot of talent,” says Simmons. “It seems to me that when Martin [Lawrence] and Jamie [Foxx] and Cedric [Kyles, or Cedric the Entertainer] and Bernie Mac and Chris Tucker and Bill Bellamy and Steve Harvey and Dave Chappelle and Tracy Morgan got their first break, people were waiting by the stage at Def Comedy Jam and giving them cross-over roles where they played for more than 10 percent of the population … Now Hollywood’s a very passionate, sweet, liberal place. But they’re no more integrated than ‘Jerry Springer’.”

Future dates and showtimes can be found on Inside Jokes’ website.
