Broadway’s ‘After Midnight’ Opens: How Long Until Hugh Jackman Goes In?

Jackman, k.d. lang are in the crowd for the Cotton Club revue's Rialto bow starring Fantasia and Dule Hill

The Broadway opening of Cotton Club revue “After Midnight” raised a couple of burning questions. Chief among them: How long until Hugh Jackman goes into the show as one of its special guest stars?

Jackman was in the audience for the opening night perf Nov. 3, and he’s got two notable connections to the production. For one, the show’s director, Warren Carlyle, also helmed Jackman’s last smash hit outing on the Main Stem, “Hugh Jackman, Back on Broadway.” And producer Scott Sanders is also producing “Houdini,” the upcoming Rialto musical in which Jackman is set to star.

“Wouldn’t it be great if he were in this?” Carlyle asked at the show’s after party at the Copacabana. “I was watching him watch the show tonight. He loves those tap numbers. Watch out!”

Also in the audience was k.d. lang, who’s lined up for a stint in the show following in the footsteps of current guest star Fantasia Barrino. Carlyle says he’ll be happy to revisit the production when lang joins in February.

“Opening night is usually so bittersweet,” he says. “I sit home the next day and I have no job.”

Another burning question: Who knew Dule Hill could sing and dance?

Anyone who saw him in Broadway’s 1996 outing “Bring in ‘Da Noise, Bring in ‘Da Funk,” that’s who. He’s been tapping since he was 3, and he keeps it up even during TV gigs that don’t make use of his hoofing skills.

“I practice everyday,” he said. “Just ask all the cast members of ‘Psych’ and ‘The West Wing’!”
